Pic: Helen Fickling/Media 10 ImagesDavid and Greta Iredale were presented in the Big Channel 4 Designs in 2004 with their Huf Haus. An update of your story is due to be analyzed this year / February 05 2010 04:46 AM Johnny Cash's Forty Shades of Green underestimates the position here today with environmental problems that govern ruin. But get ready for a new tone... and a "green green" to boot. The renowned German construction company Huf Haus will launch its cutting-edge and energy-efficient construction service on the Emerald Island later this year and aims to teach Irish builders one or two things about what is really "green". The firm made a big impact here a few years ago when the Canal 4 'Grand Designs' program closed lyric about its construction techniques. The spectators marveled at seeing a Huf house erected by the British couple retreated David and Rita Iredale in a four-day jaw with maximum German clinical precision - despite the delays in the foundation stage caused by a local concrete company, and later by a late crane driver. The Iredales were "flabbergasted" by the final result, while the British architectural guru Kevin McCloud was equally impressed. "If Mercedes built houses, that's how they would," he said in a real amazement at German construction engineering produced during the course of his show. The family-owned firm Huf Haus claims to be the leader of the European market in contemporary post-y-beam architecture. It has an annual turnover of 100 million euros and promises to offer a advance of system construction in this country. "The green home (r)evolution is our main contribution to environmental and climate protection," says Georg Huf, president of Huf Haus. "We hope to launch our services in Ireland, which we know is very focused on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability issues. " Established in 1912, Huf Haus has developed its range of luxury wooden houses with the express intention of bringing environmental sustainability to a new level. The company produces only about 150 houses each year, of which about 40pc are exported worldwide. In the 1970s, Huf Haus significantly redefined its post-y-beam constructions, using reduced design language, large glass areas and open-plan floor designs. The timeless buildings of glass and wood, with clear modernist lines, are unmistakable features of all Huf houses, which are constantly enhanced in line with the latest technical and design trends. The firm is targeting six to eight Irish clients in their first year here. This may seem modest, but achieving this goal will be a challenge in the current economic climate. The German company DaVinci found the Irish market a nutshell difficult to break and has closed its marketing operation here. Huf's houses cost around €2,000 to €2,500 per square meter - approximately two or three times the level that a home built by quality system usually costs in this country. But don't think of prefabricated when you think Huf Haus -- thinks of contemporary design "factorwow", high-tech methodology and "fast construction" par excellence. However, it is possible to purchase a product with quality wood structure in this country at significantly lower prices. Apart from the operation of the century Kingspan, German Passive Homes, in Greystones, Co Wicklow, represents the powerful group Forshem and will provide a tough competition for the newcomer. The Iredales were delighted with their purchase of Huf Haus. However, the main fly in the ointment for them was the change factor. They failed to build this element in their calculations. Irish buyers will not have such concerns, although they will have to take into account extras like cleaning regular windows at just €500 a pop if the German 'glass house' option is removed here. Since the pouring of foundations and the construction of the structure, it usually takes about three or four months before the occupation. A trip to Huf HQ will also be required to hammer the personal specifications and fixing/adjustment details. "Huf's houses are not cheap," says Huf's marketing chief Michael Baumann (his last name is German for builder). "They cost him a lot, but they're not expensive at the end of the day. "It's the Rolls Royce of building the house - and what everyone aspires to." The prospective buyers can see a range of Huf houses in a spectacle village near Frankfurt - all dismantled in the latest contemporary interior designs, at construction prices ranging from around €500,000 to € 2.5 m more. The most expensive Huf house, about 10m, has been built for a private customer in Switzerland. Huf houses are 'third generation' in every way. Founded by Johann Huf in 1912 as a carpentry business, the firm was expanded by his son Franz, completing projects such as the German and Arabic Pavilions at the Brussels World Exhibition. The company later broke land changing to the production of prefabricated wood panels and turnkey construction. Currently led by Georg and Thomas Huf, the firm has now embraced the new 'eco-era' with revenge. Its main innovation lies in the fact that all constructive wood parts have been provided with a high-efficiency insulation layer, eliminating the usual thermal bridges. Home " Property " Get the best home stories, property and gardening directly into your inbox every Saturday. Enter the email address This field is necessary "We have remained faithful to our architectural visions while we manage to preserve the classic design that our customers so much appreciate," says Thomas Huf, chief architect and co-chair of Huf Haus. All glass panels are triple panels and with a low rock bottom u-factor. This is accompanied by the most advanced energy services, using heat pumps and self-regulation measurement/control technology. Huf Haus can provide individual solutions for all types of regenerative energy systems, including controlled ventilation, solar-thermal and photovoltaic systems. The firm even supplies 90pc or more of all accessories and accessories, door handles, light switches and integrated pipe. Huf's houses meet strict new energy-saving regulations in Germany, which stipulates a reduction of 60pc in the energy needs of new households by 2012. However, it remains to be seen how German specifications are received by the notoriously conservative authority of Irish planning, and our authority of national standards. The preponderance of the glass in the German design could, for example, try a stumbling block. However, the firm has already overcome these obstacles and has successfully completed a major nursing home in Co Sligo. Maggie Moran is the Irish representative of Huf Haus, and is currently helping two potential customers plan and design new homes in Wicklow and Sligo. The Irish agent is currently negotiating the necessary certifications of the competent authorities. Huf Haus' partner architect in Ireland is Denis Byrne Architects based in Dublin. This award-winning practice recently won the international architecture competition for the new national distribution control building of Bord Gais networks. "The imminent launch of Huf Haus in Ireland will provide a compelling opportunity for new housing builders to choose an advanced architectural building with integrated energy efficiency and environmental sustainability," said Ms. Moran. The house of the flat herd: everything you need to know about modular houses The flat package houses are a new exciting approach to the house building. Our special series focuses on the latest innovations. They are faster and cheaper to build that traditional brick and mortar houses and, finally, the housing authorities are recognizing that flat package homes or modular housing are part of the response to our housing crisis. So far, they have been favored mainly because of this is unique, but without the challenges of self-compilation. And while that option remains, the flat package is now being put into other uses as well, in homes, and to expand existing housing. In this new series, we look at the greatest developments in modular housing, starting with impressive custom properties. Your SENTIAL address to a sand leaf The flat or modular houses are built mainly in a factory, often just below the walls that are glued and accessories like and bathrooms equipped to the walls. Then they are delivered to the site ready to be slotted together. As most are done under cover in a factory, bad weather cannot keep the job, making this an efficient method. It is often cheaper than a traditional construction by up to 25%, and can incorporate many ecological features. In the UK, this style of building has been favoured mainly by self-compiler or custom builders – where modular companies build a house on a single plot to the exact specifications of a owner – and so the numbers here are small. According to a report from the law firm, of the 200,000 new homes built every year in the United Kingdom, only about 15,000 are modular. Historically they were associated with the low-quality prefabs built in post-war Britain. But modern materials and construction methods, the flexibility provided by houses and the production speed means that more people, mortgage providers and housing authorities are seeing them as a viable option. Up to now, modular homes have been associated with European companies like or , and there is no doubt that the German, Scandinavian and even Estonian companies led the way. Now British companies are being established as well-designed and good-quality modular house suppliers. What's it about? The flat packaging houses are built mainly from SIPs (structural isolation groups) that provide a flat and smooth surface. Externally, they can be decorated with cedar or larch or zinc coating for a contemporary look, traditionally painted or stained with time and brick or stone to complement the surrounding buildings. Some companies are looking at more ecological materials. they build modular houses, as the name suggests, bamboo! What are the options?• Turnkey Completely finished houses built to your exact specifications.• Hemp or Bonus Units that contain all the pieces you need – floor, ceiling, walls, doors, windows, etc – but you put everything yourself. This could be a good package if you are a self-compiler.• Basic Build – the company provides the pieces and the boards, but it fits the foundations like the floor, the kitchen and the bathroom. Can you trust them? In theory, your house could be adapted exactly to your dream, but the more passionate and luxurious it will cost. As these homes are built in factories, the quality and consistency of the work is standardized, and many manufacturers work in a model catalogue. However, they are usually interested in creating custom designs using high-quality materials that the customer prefers. If you need to keep the costs low, you may need to work with the standard size of the manufacturer for room sizes, ceiling heights and door openings. Before deciding anything, it is worth talking to the company's internal designer or architect about what is possible in his chosen model. Are they ENERGY EFFECTIVE? Yes, it is easy to include measures such as isolation and triple glazing. Many are certified as , the highest possible energy efficient construction. 'We're seeing a lot of people thinking about living in a low-impact way: getting away from the executive house of five rooms, and into the low-impact house or even the "high house," says Nick Newman, an architectural practice of the UK that pioneered its own construction system, U-Build. 'The factory area is a great factor in terms of cost and environmental impact, so it is often better to go for a smaller design, greener than the money diffused thin in a larger flat area. The key is a good design, and a complete look at the space you really use and spend your time on.' What about planning the mission? Check with the planning department of your council that you are likely to grant permission for a flat package house before buying land. Then, once you have an agreement in principle and have purchased the land, your modular company should work with you to get the full permission. As they are made up of modules, these houses can be architecturally interesting, and when they are found on their own land, they can be impressive. But the backpacks can also be built on land on an ordinary street, in which case they will probably have to fit into the street landscape. How easy is getting a massage? Structural guarantees are often the key to unlocking finance for new constructions," says Nick Newman from Studio Bark. "The problem for the self-compiled market is that many structural warranty providers are designed around the traditional "brick and block" construction route, which favors intensive energy and carbon processes as concrete. It is inherently difficult for modern construction methods to meet, although we have had some success after enough work! Check that your mortgage provider acknowledges the construction system used by the manufacturer as being "standard construction" and that the house you plan does not fall under legislation aimed at caravans and mobile homes. It also discusses how the money will be provided; your construction company may need to be paid in stages and so you will need a "pilated" loan. "And check with your insurers or the modular housing company that will issue a 10-year warranty, as this is a requirement of all mortgage lenders for new homes," says Michael Holmes. Also in this series, we will focus on semi-detached prefab houses and how the flat package can help you add space to your current home.
